I remember a scene years ago. Two bearded men sitting at a lunch counter – I have obviously false whiskers and I dip my hands in the other’s finger bowl and dry them on his whiskers. It wasn’t treated as comedy. It was madness that the audience recognized as madness, but I treated it perfectly normally. The audience feels it is in on something special, something the person on the moving sceen isn’t. That’s the basic element that’s in comedy. And if you can make that poignant enough, the audience really loves it.
